Staff Selection Commission invites application from eligible candidates for recruitment to the post of Stenographer Grade ‘C' and Grade ‘D'. The commission will hold a Combined All India Open Examination for the recruitment.
Name of the Post for Stenographers (Grade ‘C' & ‘D') Examination 2012
- Stenographer Grade ‘C': Ministries/ Departments of Central Government, located mostly in Delhi
- Stenographer Grade ‘D': The vacancies for Stenographer Grade ‘D' are categorised in two groups mentioned below
a) Group ‘X': For Ministries/ Departments of Central Government located mostly in Delhi
b) Group ‘Y': For Offices/ Departments of Central Government including Attached/ Subordinate Offices located in States and Union Territories all over the country.
Important Dates for Stenographers (Grade ‘C' & ‘D') Examination 2012
- Opening date for online/ offline receipt of application: 28 April 2012
- Closing date for Part I registration for online applicants: 23 May 2012 upto 5 pm
- Closing date for Part II registration for online applicants: 25 May 2012 upto 5 pm
- Closing date for sending receipt of application: 25 May 2012 upto 5 pm
- Closing date for receipt of application (candidates from far flung areas) : 1 June 2012
- Date of Exam: 29 July 2012
Eligibility Criteria for Stenographers (Grade ‘C' & ‘D') Examination 2012
- Educational Qualification: Applicant should have passed 12th Standard from a recognised board/ University
- Age Limit (as on 1 August 2012): 18 to 27 years
Selection Procedure for Stenographers (Grade ‘C' & ‘D') Examination 2012: The examination will consist of a written examination (objective type) and skill test in stenography.

Note: There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. Candidates are, therefore, advised to keep this in mind while answering the questions.
Skill Test
Candidates who obtain qualifying marks in the Written Examination will have to appear for the stenography test which is qualifying in nature. The candidates will be given one dictation for 10 minutes in English/ Hindi which has to be transcribed on computer only.
- Stenographer Grade ‘D'
a) 50 minutes (English) 100 words per minute (75 minutes for VH in English Shorthand)
b) 65 minutes (Hindi) 100 words per minute (100 minutes for VH in Hindi Shorthand) - Stenographer Grade ‘C'
a) 40 minutes (English) 80 words per minute (70 minutes for VH in English Shorthand)
b) 55 Minutes (Hindi) 80 words per minute (95 minutes for VH in Hindi Shorthand)
Note: Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment.
Mode of Selection for Stenographers (Grade ‘C' & ‘D') Examination 2012
Candidates will be shortlisted for the skill test on the basis of their performance in the Written Examination. Candidates who qualify in the skill test will be recommended for appointment by the Commission on the basis of their performance in the Written Examination.
How to Apply for Stenographers (Grade ‘C' & ‘D') Examination 2012
Applications must be submitted only in the prescribed format (Annexure-I) On-line or by Post to Regional/ Sub-Regional Offices of the Commission.
Application Fee: No application fee will be charged from Women candidates, SC, ST, Physically handicapped and Ex-servicemen and fee for General Category candidate is Rs 100.
The application fee is payable through CRF Stamps for off-line application or on line payment through account with SBI challan in the case of online application.
