It consists of two papers GS paper I and GS paper II, 300 marks each. Paper I covers topics such as Current National Issues and topics of Social Relevance, History of Modern India and Indian Culture, Constitution of India and Indian Polity and Geography of India. While, paper II covers topics such as India and the World, India’s Economic Interaction with the rest of the World, Development in the field of Science and Technology, Information Technology, Space, International Affairs and World Organisation and Institutions and Statistical Analysis, Graphs and Diagrams etc.
History of Modern India and Indian Culture: History of Modern India and Indian culture forms a significant part of GS paper-1. You need not only remember the past events and facts but should be able to analyse them in present perspective. Pay special attention to all the major events during freedom struggle.
Geography of India: The segment plays a crucial role when it comes to getting through IAS Main exam. It has high weightage in Mains exam. One should focus on sections like Physical Geography of India, Irrigation, Census, Agriculture, Industries and Mineral Resources of India. Besides, you should also do map study. Pay attention to any place, river or dam which has been in news for some reasons.
Constitution of India and Indian Polity: It is one of the important topics of the General Studies for Civil Services exam. One needs to study Indian Polity along with overall governance of the country. Besides, you should learn how to co-relate current issues with the factual part of the subject.
Current National Issues and Topics of Social Relevance: This segment tests your awareness of current national issues and topics of social relevance in modern India. The emphasis is on the applied aspect of the subject rather than on the academic aspect.
