GS (General Studies) can play the most decisive role in cracking IAS Main exam 2012 and at the same time helping you to get high rank. Most of the students give more importance to optional papers, while putting GS aside. It shows their careless attitude because GS counts for 600 out of total 2000 marks in the main examination. Being good in GS can help them in the essay paper as well which is of 200 marks. If someone doesn’t score well in GS paper, optional alone can’t help you out.

Therefore, one should have a winning strategy in place for IAS Main exam. One should start with selecting important areas and then doing extensive study. If someone goes through the previous years’ question papers, he/she can find that questions of current affairs are increasing. It makes Current Affairs section very important. Following is the list of steps one should follow to master GS paper:

1) Work on Your basics: The GS paper in IAS main exam demands that one should have basic knowledge of subjects like Science, History, Economics, Civics and Geography. For that, one should thoroughly read NCERT books from class VI to class XII and jot down all the major and minor facts. Moreover, clear your concepts as well. It will help you while writing answers and could save your time if your concepts are clear.

2) Prepare well for Current Affairs Section: Current Affairs Section has been predominant at every stage of IAS exam whether it is IAS Prelims, IAS mains or IAS Interview. Your knowledge of Current Affairs will always be tested. If you want to gain an edge over other candidates then you should make all the efforts to strengthen this section. Read newspapers like Hindu and Times of India daily and visit the portal www.jagranjosh.com regularly which caters to the needs of the IAS aspirants.

3) Test yourself with the help of Model Test Papers: Attempt a model paper in GS that follows the examination pattern of IAS Main. It will help you structure your preparation according to the examination pattern. Once you attempt a model test paper, got it checked by an expert. If you score high enough, then don’t be complacent and attempt more model test papers.

4) Holding Group Discussions: If you join a group for discussion on what have you learnt, it will be helpful in identifying your strengths and weaknesses.
