Over a dozen of citizens of Myanmar started a march of 2400 km on 23 March 2014 to protest against the construction of Myitsone dam. Mytisone dam is a hydro-electric dam being built by China over the River Irrawady in Kachin state of Myanmar.
The protestors were demanding for the permanent cancellation of the construction of dam as it is environmentally hazardous. The construction of the dam was suspended in 2011 but protesters now are worried that it may resume after the 2015 general elections.
Myistone dam was supposed to export 90 per cent of its power to China. The cost of the project is 3.6 billion US dollar.
