Air India on 5 January 2011 raised fuel surcharge by Rs 100 for travel up to 750 km and Rs 200 for flights over 750 km. After the hike, the revised fuel surcharge stands at Rs 2450 and Rs 3300. Jet Airways and Kingfisher had raised fuel surcharges by Rs 100 and Rs 200 on their domestic sectors from 1 January 2011. The hike was deemed necessary as aviation fuel prices increased significantly in the past few months. ATF prices saw a hike with the crossing of USD 92 a barrel by the international crude price.
