The 2010 Asian Games known as the XVI Asiad, was a multi-sport event in Guangzhou, China held from 12 November to 27 November 2010. Guangzhou was the second Chinese city to host the Games. Beijing had first organized the Asian Games in 1990.
Guangzhou was awarded the right to host the games on 1 July 2004. It was sole biding city for the games. The opening and closing ceremonies were held along the Pearl River in Haixinsha Island. For the second time in the history of the Asian Games the opening ceremony for a major sports event was not held inside a stadium. A total of 476 events in 42 sports were contested by athletes. The 16th Asian Games till date is the largest event in the history of the Games. China led the medal tally followed by South Korea and Japan in the second and third place respectively. China created a record by winning 199 gold medals. In the 16th Asian Games three world record and 103 Asian Games record were broken.

The Asian Games, officially known as Asiad, is a multi-sport event which is held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. Till 1982 the Games were regulated by the Asian Games Federation (AGF). Since the 1982 the Asian Games are organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). The Asian Games are the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games. The 1st Asian Games were held from 4 to 11 March 1951 in Delhi, India.
