The Election Commission of India on 1 March 2011 announced the assembly elections in Assam, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala and Puducherry from 4 April to 10 May 2011. It further added in its announcement that the counting would be uniformly taken up on 13 May 2011.
West Bengal will have a six-phase poll on April 18 April, 23, 27, 3 May, 7 and 10 while the elections in Assam will be held in two phases — April 4 and 11 — and in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry the poll will be held on 13 April.
The Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi along with Election Commissioner HS Brahma and VS Sampath stated in their announcement that for the first time non-resident Indians-already registered themselves as voters- would be eligible to vote.The instructions had been given to polling officials regarding this.
