Three marine organisms, Deep Sea Smoky batfish, Grooved Razor Fish and frog crab were rediscovered in the Bay of Bengal off the Andhra Pradesh coast by the Indian research vessel Sagar Sampda in the first week of January 2011. These three marine species were rediscovered after a gap of more than 100 years.
The Batfish was first discovered in 1894 by Alfred William Alcock in the Bay of Bengal during a survey. The survey was conducted by the royal Indian Marine Survey Ship called Investigator.
Razor fish, known also as shrimpfish and Pipette feeders, was first discovered by Francis Day from the Gulf of Mannar in 1878 while the frog crab was first described by B.Chopra from the Andaman Sea in 1933. B.Chopra was the former director of the Zoological Survey of India.
