The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure on 16 November 2011 approved 15 projects for highway construction of about 1814 kilometres at an estimated cost of Rs 15680 crore.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is to undertake 10 of these projects projects whereas implementation of the rest of the projects would rest with the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh state agencies. 14 projects would be taken up on BOT-Toll model, only 1 project will need government assistance through annuity payments. Most of the projects involve 4 laning of the existing stretches.
The government is currently expediting work in Left Wing affected areas as well as North-East region, which is being implemented by the Road ministry. In the Left Wing areas, bids for 1286 kms and work for executing 524 kms has been awarded so far in 2011.
