Cyclone Amphan: West Bengal govt announces Rs. 1000 crore fund for post cyclone restoration work

Apart from announcing the fund of Rs. 1000 crore, state’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also announced a compensation of Rs. 2.5 lakh for the family members of the deceased.

West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee on May 21 announced that the fund of Rs. 1000 crore has been created for the reconstruction work of the areas affected in Cyclone Amphan. The cyclone has claimed 72 lives in the state so far.

During the video conference, CM Mamata Banerjee informed that 5 lakh people have been evacuated till now and 8 districts have been severely impacted. Even amid the shortage of funds, the Rs. 1000 crore fund has been created from the state fund.

West Bengal CM also mentioned that more migrant workers have entered the state and it is an extremely challenging situation. She mentioned that Home Minister Amit Shah assured that all possible help post-cyclone will be given to the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conducted the aerial survey of the Cyclone Amphan affected areas in West Bengal on May 22. The PM did the serial survey along with the state’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Key Highlights:

•    West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee informed that the situation is not good in the state as there is no water, electricity, or internet in the affected areas.

•     She also informed that Secretariat was shaking and window panes were broken because of Cyclone Amphan which made it seem like that the building might collapse.

•     As per the officials of the state, the estimated number of human fatalities as on May 21 is 17 from North 24 Parganas, 15 from Kolkata, 4 from South 24 Parganas-Sunderban areas, and 10 from Basirhat.

Reviewing the damage in the state:

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee informed that she will be visiting North and South 24 Parganas after the situation gets under control as reaching the affected areas is not possible for now. However, she has asked the police for the drone surveillance of the affected areas.

Apart from announcing the fund of Rs. 1000 crore, state’s Chief Minister has also announced a compensation of Rs. 2.5 lakh for the family members of the deceased. She stated that the state government will support them in the ongoing crisis. Mamata Banerjee also mentioned that 40 to 50 percent of trees have been uprooted during the cyclone but more trees will be planted once the situation improves.
