1. (a) Russia

The President of Russia Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, announced a military operation in Ukraine and soon explosions were heard across cities in Ukraine including capital Kyiv. The move has prompted an outrage from leaders across the world including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres who made a last-minute plea to Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war 'in the name of humanity'.

Ukraine declared independence on August 24, 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Both Russia and Ukraine were part of the 15 Republics that made up the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) before its dissolution in 1991.

Russia and Ukraine were part of the 15 Soviet republics including Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Belarus that made up the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) before its dissolution in 1991. 

4. (d) Ukraine

Ukraine is not a NATO member country, it is a NATO partner country. The other three former Soviet Republics- Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are now NATO members.

NATO alliance has a total of 30 member countries including 2 North American countries, 27 European countries and 1 Eurasian country. Under the alliance, the member countries have agreed to come to one another's aid in the event of armed attack against any one member state. 

6. (d) North Macedonia  

North Macedonia is the last country to join the NATO alliance as a member state. It joined the alliance in 2020. Before that Montenegro joined the alliance in 2017.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), is a military alliance that was formed in 1949 by 12 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK and France. It was formed largely to counter the threat from the Soviet Union post World War II. 

8. (d) Assam

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched India’s first Night Navigation mobile application for ferry services on the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati, Assam. The App has been developed by the State Transport Department in association with K Raju, the principal scientist of IIT Madras.
