Dr. Harsh Vardhan represents India in NAM Health Ministers virtual meet

The Health Ministers of NAM expressed their concerns as the pandemic pose a global threat and discussed fighting it with proper preparedness, resilience building, and regional, national, and international collaboration.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, attended the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Health Minister’s meeting on May 20 which took place through a video conference.

The NAM Health Minister’s virtual meet was chaired by Ogtay Shiraliyev, Minister of Health, Republic of Azerbaijan. The meeting was organized as the International community has been facing COVID-19 pandemic that has disrupted lives all over the world.

The Health Ministers of NAM expressed their concerns as the pandemic pose a global threat and discussed fighting it with proper preparedness, resilience building, and regional, national, and international collaboration.

Dr. Vardhan’s address during the meet: Key Highlights:

•    While addressing the NAM Health Ministers during the virtual meet, the Union Health minister congratulated Ogtay Shiraliyev from the Republic of Azerbaijan on organizing the important conference at this crucial time.

•    Harsh Vardhan mentioned that it is an unprecedented time in the planet’s history as the ongoing pandemic has disrupted lives all over the world and has infected millions of people.

•    He also mentioned that COVID-19 has made us realise that we all are interdependent and interconnected than ever before and the man-made challenges can only be faced if we are all together. There is a need for collaboration and not coercion.

•    The Health Minister underlined that the pandemic has reminded us that international institutions of governance are required to be more democratic, representative to be credible and effective, and transparent.

•   He highlighted that India has been looking forward to the collective journey of cooperation, collaborations, and constructive deliberations in the spirit of fraternity and solidarity that characterizes NAM.

India in NAM Health Ministers Virtual Meeting:

The Union Health Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan during his address highlighted that India has been fighting the battle with a firm political will. He mentioned that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi had ensured scale, speed, and determination while handling the crisis, and India has taken every possible step for the containment of the COVID-19 virus.

The minister assured that while focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic, patients suffering from other diseases have not been neglected. Talking about the support from the whole country he informed that 1.35 billion Indians came together to support nationwide lockdown due to which India has been able to keep its mortality rate down and was able to contain the spread of the virus.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan mentioned that India’s policy that entails micro identification, mass isolation, and quick treatment resulted in preventing the deaths and large-scale spread of Coronavirus.

During his address, he informed the health ministers that India was able to add capacity in terms of infrastructure and manpower during this time of crisis. He mentioned that India has been able to get a hold on the situation with the help of 10,000 dedicated COVID-19 hospitals and care centres along with a trained healthcare workforce of over two million.

Offering help to its neighboring countries:

Dr. Harsh Vardhan added that India has also extended help to other countries as well. There has been a promotion for coordination to counter COVID-19, in our immediate neighboring countries. There have also been efforts on organizing capacity building in the neighborhood by sharing India’s medical expertise.

He mentioned that apart from meeting the domestic needs, India has also provided medical supplies to over 123 countries which include 59 members of NAM. India has also been taking an active part in the global efforts for the development of COVID-19 vaccines.
