Essar Steel on 4 May 2011 announced that that it has won an order from Mazagaon Dock to supply 13000 tonnes of heavy plates. Essar Steel also claimed that it is the first domestic producer of steel plates to be approved by the Government for supply to the Indian Navy for building warships.
The heavy plates supplied to Mazagaon Dock (MDL) will be used for manufacturing state-of-the-art ships for defence. This is for the first time that MDL has placed an order for such a large consignment with a domestic steel mill.
The order follows a stringent mill audit of Essar Steel's recently commissioned wide-plate mill conducted by teams from Directorate of Naval Architecture, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory and Director General of Quality Assurance of the Ministry of Defence.
Essar’s plate mill which is capable of producing plates with a thickness ranging from 5 to 150 mm, width from 900 to 4900 mm and 3 m to 25 m in length has an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes and was set up at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore. Plates produced at the mill find applications in defence, oil and gas, boilers and pressure vessels, heavy duty earth-moving machines, wind towers, mine protective vehicles and construction.
