A former mushroom and poultry farmer Leah Kalanguka was crowned as Miss Uganda 2014 on 26 October 2014. Leah Kalanguka topped the contest by beating 19 other finalists after the competition that was designed to promote agriculture in the east African nation.
As Miss Uganda, Leah was awarded a Toyota Raum Brand new car and is entitled to a monthly stipend as salary that she will be receiving quarterly. In the competition, contestants were asked to field questions on farming on stage, to milk cows and work with goats and sheep.
Other winners were Sheilla Karungi (Miss Rising woman 2014), Christine Tayebwa (Miss Popularity 2014), Yasmin Taban (Miss Personality 2014) and Sheena Kyoriza (Miss Beach Beauty 2014). These top finalists will eventually be used for marketing the produce including potato flour, mango juice, cornflakes and honey.
After following the more traditional beauty pageant formula for years, organisers applied the theme of promoting agriculture entrepreneurship among the youth this time in the event and partnered with the Ugandan army which has major business interests in the farm sector.
