The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests on 24 August 2010 rejected the Vedanta’s proposal to mine bauxite in Niyamgiri hills of Orissa. The ministry also banned the Vedanta refinery from buying bauxite (the main raw material needed to make Aluminium) from 11 other mines in Jharkhand on the basis that these were illegal. According to the ministry, Vedanta violated the Forest Rights Act 2006, the Forest Conservation Act, 1980 and Environment Protection Act, 1966.
