The United States Space Force announced a new name for its members on December 18, 2020. The space force announced that its space professionals will now be known as 'Guardians'.

The US Space Force in a series of tweets said that after a year-long process that involved hundreds of submissions and research involving space professionals and general public members, the space force can finally share the name by which they will be known: Guardians.

It added saying that the name Guardians connects their proud heritage and culture to the important mission executed by them, which is protecting the people and interest of the US and its allies.

Further, the space force tweeted saying that the opportunity to name a force is a momentous responsibility and Guardians is a name that has a long history in space operations. The name can be traced back to the original command motto of Air Force Space Command in 1983, 'Guardians of the High Frontier.'

The Space Force in a statement on its website in February 2020 had announced that it is looking for feedback from US military space professionals on what Space Force members should be called in line with how the Air Force refers to its members as 'Airmen' or the Army calls its members 'Soldiers.'

The Space Force's website had further stated that given the significance, the name has to the identity and culture of an organization, hence, the Space Force is taking a deliberate approach to ensure that the title and ranks of the Space Force members correctly convey the nature of the newest US Armed Forces branch and the domain in which it operates.
