The central government has added Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to the list of Maharatna companies, bringing the total number of Maharatna companies to 14.
HAL was previously a Navratna company, and with its promotion, the number of Navratna companies has now decreased to 24.
What does it Mean to be a Maharatna?
With HAL becoming a Maharatna, it now has more financial and operational independence. The declaration permits HAL to invest up to ₹5,000 crore in international enterprises and 15% of its net worth in projects without obtaining permission from the government. The stock price increased by 1.42% to trade at ₹4,510 in response to the encouraging development.
Which Companies Become Maharatna?
There are certain criteria that have to be met for a company to acquire the status of a Maharatna.
To qualify for Maharatna status, Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) must first have Navratna status and meet strict financial benchmarks, including:

Earlier, the central government updated the list of Navratna companies by adding four public sector units (PSUs). The newly added PSUs were SJVN, Solar Energy Corporation, NHPC, and RailTel Corporation of India.
