Former Lok Sabha speaker Balram Jakhar’s son Surinder died on 17 January 2011 after he accidentally shot himself in the head while cleaning his revolver. Surinder headed Iffco, India’s biggest farm inputs cooperative. He was involved with cooperatives for about three decades and is known for his work on agricultural and rural development. He was the founder chairman of Iffco-Tokio. In 1987, he was elected managing director of the Fazilka Cooperative Society and became Iffco director in 1988.
