India and Madagascar plan on signing several pacts for enhancing ties between the two nations. Memorandum of Understanding in the field of health, traditional medicine, telemedicine, tourism, culture, and tele-education are under discussion.

The ties between India and Madagascar have been witnessing an upswing as the Indian Ambassador Abhay Kumar on November 23, 2020 met Tehindrazanarivelo Djacoba Liva, Foreign Minister of Madagascar and both the officials took stock of the bilateral relations between both the countries.

India’s contribution to the development of Madagascar:

For strengthening the ties between the two nations, India has set up Bhabhatron which is a radiotherapy machine at the HJRA Hospital in Antananarivo, Capital of Madagascar. India also runs a Centre for Geospatial Applications for the Rural Development in Madagascar.

Earlier in 2018, President Ram Nath Kovind had also visited the East African country on a state visit during which a defence cooperation agreement was also signed.

India-Madagascar relations:

Madagascar has a strong diaspora with India mostly from Gujarat and over 20,000 Indians play a major role in the trade and economy of Madagascar.

Specifically in February 2011, relations between the two nations were considered normal with several of high-level officials having exchange visits over the course of developing relations. Approximately, 20,000 people of Indian origin have been living in Madagascar, which includes 2,500 Indian citizens.

Ram Nath Kovind in March 2018 became the first President for visiting Madagascar. He was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Second Class which is Madagascar’s highest-honour for non-citizens by Madagascar Prime Minister.
