Indian aid worker Alexis Prem Kumar abducted in the Herat Province of Afghanistan

Heart Province: Indian Alexis Prem Kumar abducted

Heart Province in Afghanistan was in news because an Indian aid worker and Catholic priest Alexis Prem Kumar was abducted on 2 June 2014.

Prem Kumar hails from Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu and was working with an educational charity. He was abducted by six Taliban militants in Zenda Jan district of Heart province.

Earlier on 23 May 2014, Heart province was in news due to attack on the Indian Consulate. Four heavily armed attackers, who were carrying rocket-propelled grenades, attacked the building and in the exchange of fire the four gunmen were killed.

This was second attack on Indian Consulate in Afghanistan. In August 2013 attack in Afghanistan's Jalalabad, 9 persons were killed and 24 got injured.
