Ingrid Daubechies of the U.S. became the first woman to lead the International Mathematical Union in August 2010. The General Assembly of International Mathematical Union elected Daubechies as the President of the Union for the 2011-14 term. Professor Daubechies was born in Belgium in 1954 and settled in the U.S. from 1987. She is a professor at the Department of Mathematics at Princeton University, New Jersey and is the first woman professor of mathematics at the University. She was the first woman to be awarded the U.S.'s National Academy of Sciences Medal in mathematics, which she received in 2000.
