Israeli defence minister Ehud Barak on 17 January 2011abruptly announced his decision to leave the Labor Party. His decision to quit Israel’s Labor Party came as a blow to the movement that dominated Israeli politics for decades. Barak’s decision also resulted in setting off a chain reaction that cast new doubts over already troubled peace efforts with the Palestinians.
The split in the iconic party, Labor Party that resulted from Barak’s leaving the party that had led Israel to independence however did not appear to threaten the majority of PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition. Barak, a former PM and military chief, will stay on in ruling coalition with four followers who joined him. With a smaller but more unified majority and rid of dissenting voices, the Israeli government is expected to find it easier to dig in on hard-line positions.
Labor Party has been the sole moderate party in Netanyahu’s coalition, which is otherwise dominated by religious and nationalist parties that oppose major concessions to the Palestinians.
