Israeli diplomats on 23 March 2014 launched an unprecedented and indefinite strike over a long-running pay and conditions dispute. The strike happened for the first time since Israel was established in 1948.
The diplomats are demanding an increase in monthly salaries, that is., 6000-9000 shekels (1700 US dollar -2600 US dollar). They are also demanding the compensation for their spouses who are forced to quit jobs due to foreign postings of diplomats.
The strike had forced the complete closure of 103 foreign embassies of Israel. The strike involved about 1200 Foreign Service employees. During this indefinite strike, Israel will not be represented at any international gatherings. This strike will thus affect everyone including employers who bring foreign workers to Israel, immigrants, and anyone who wants to travel to Israel including foreign dignitaries.
