IT Department simplifies linking PAN with Aadhaar for taxpayers
In a rare case, where Aadhaar name is completely different from name in PAN, then the linking will fail.
The Income Tax (IT) Department on 11 May 2017 launched an e-facility for taxpayers to link their Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar.
With this, taxpayers can go to http://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and click on 'Link Aadhaar' on the left pane and provide PAN, Aadhaar number and Name exactly as given in aadhaar card and Submit. After verification from UIDAI, the linking will be confirmed.
In order to link PAN with Aadhaar, there is no need to login or be registered on the E-filing website.
Two-step process of linking Aadhar with PAN
Linking Aadhar with PAN on the Income Tax website: Visit www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and click on the link on 'Link Aadhaar as shown in the image below.
Provide the Details: Provide PAN, Aadhaar number and enter name exactly as given in Aadhaar Card and submit.
Moreover, in case of any minor mismatch in Aadhaar name provided by taxpayer when compared to the actual data in Aadhaar, a One Time Password (Aadhaar OTP) will be sent to the mobile registered with Aadhaar.
In a rare case, where Aadhaar name is completely different from name in PAN, then the linking will fail and taxpayer will be prompted to change the name in either Aadhaar or in PAN database.
The e-facility of IT Department came after the department received the grievances of taxpayers regarding difficulties in linking PAN with Aadhaar as their names did not match in both systems.
This facility will be useful for E-Verification of Income Tax returns using OTP sent on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
