According to an official statement, the Maharashtra government has bestowed the title of "Rajyamata-Gomata" upon native cows of the state. This was done in an effort to improve their welfare, taking into account their importance dating back to the Vedic era.
The state's Department of Agriculture, Dairy Development, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries released a government resolution citing other causes as the value of native cow milk for human nutrition, the usage of cow manure in organic farming, and the application of ayurveda and panchgavya treatments.
Subsidy to Goshalas
It was resolved to launch a subsidy system offering Rs 50 per day for the upbringing of these cows in 'goshalas' during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, according to news agency ANI.
The effort, supervised by the Maharashtra Goseva Commission, intends to support suffering goshalas and reverse the dwindling population of indigenous cows, which plummeted by 20.69% according to the 2019 census.

The Goseva Commission will oversee the online implementation of the plan, which would assign a District Goshala Verification Committee to every district.
According to an official, the decision highlights the cow's spiritual, scientific, and historical value in Indian society and comes ahead of the state assembly elections.
