President Ram Nath Kovind confers Vayoshreshtha Samman to senior citizens and institutions
President Ram Nath Kovind on 9 October 2017 conferred the Vayoshreshtha Samman to eminent senior citizens and institutions in recognition of their services towards the cause of elderly persons. This year, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment honoured 22 awardees under 11 categories.

The National Award ‘Vayoshreshtha Samman’ is given in thirteen categories. The applications for the award were invited from NGOs, institutions, individuals to apply for the awards in different categories.

Vayoshreshtha Samman’ will help to motivate younger generations to understand the contribution of the elderly persons in building of the society and the nation.  

UP Cabinet approves digitalisation of land maps

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on 9 October 2017 approved digitalisation of land maps in 70 districts of the state. The Cabinet meeting was headed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The Cabinet approved an initial corpus of Rs 5.21 crore for the digitisation work. The maps will be available online and will help in checking malpractices in a big way.

Apart from this, the state cabinet also decided on one-time settlement of non-performing loans of farmers with cooperative banks.

Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways to promote new technologies in highway projects
The Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways has recently decided to implement a Value Engineering Programme to promote new technologies and material in highway projects.

The programme is aimed at using innovative technology, materials and equipment to reduce the cost of projects and make them environment friendly. It is expected to increase the speed of construction, reduce construction cost, increase asset durability and improve aesthetics and safety.

The Ministry also reconstituted a nine-member experts' panel for approving proposals for use of new technologies, material and equipment. The reconstituted panel is chaired by SR Tambe, former Secretary of PWD Maharashtra and is co-chaired by Prof Ravi Sinha of IIT Mumbai.
