Soumya Swaminathan to take charge as WHO Deputy DG
Indian Council of Medical Research Chief Soumya Swaminathan, a globally recognised researcher on tuberculosis and HIV, will assume the charge of Deputy Director-General of the WHO in Geneva in December 2017.
Her appointment as the Deputy Director-General for Programmes elevates India's stature globally. It is the second-highest position in the WHO.
Swaminathan, a paediatrician by training, is a daughter of agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan, who is hailed as the father of the 'Green Revolution'.
ISRO to launch Aditya L1 Mission in 2019
The India Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch its first solar mission Aditya-L1 in 2019. It will be India’s first dedicated scientific mission to study sun.
The mission aims to put 1500-kg heavy class Aditya-L1 satellite into halo orbit around Lagrangian point L1, a point between Sun and Earth. This point is at a distance of about 1.5 million km from earth.
The mission is a joint venture between ISRO and physicists from various institutes including Indian Institute of Astrophysics (Bengaluru), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Mumbai) and Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (Pune).
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis lays foundation stone of healthcare centre for children
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar on 26 November 2017 laid the foundation stone of a healthcare centre for children in Kharghar, Mumbai.
The centre is named as 'The Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Centre for Child Health Care and Training in Paediatric Heart Care Skill'. It would be operational in about a year.
