Railways’ first set of solar plants to be launched
Indian Railways’ first set of solar plants having a total capacity of 5 megawatt peak (MWp) would be launched in New Delhi on 27 October 2017.
The launch would be conducted by Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal. The plants built on the roof tops of Hazrat Nizamuddin, New Delhi, Anand Vihar and Delhi railway stations would be generating 76.5 lakh units of solar power cumulatively every year and are expected to meet about 30 per cent of the energy requirement of these stations.
Special Centre for Disaster Research inaugurated at JNU
The Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju inaugurated the Special Centre for Disaster Research at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi on 26 October 2017.
JNU had signed a MoU on the same with the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) on 6 August 2015. The multi-disciplinary Centre will offer Master’s and Doctorate programmes in Disaster Risk Management (DRM).
Rijiju praised the University for taking the initiative in this regard and hoped more educational institutions will come forward to conduct specialized studies in DRM.
Odisha government to use drones to conduct survey of slums
The Odisha government on 26 October 2017 decided to use drones to conduct survey of slums for the first-ever time. Slums in Konark in Puri district will first come under the survey.
The survey is expected to help know the exact areas and boundaries of the slums. The drones will, later, be mobilised for the identification of slums in other parts of the state.
The development comes just a month after the passing of the Odisha Land Rights to slum-dwellers bill.
