The Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan on September 9, 2020, attended the 10th East Asia Summit Foreign Minister’s virtual meeting during which views upon the international and regional developments including the Coronavirus pandemic were discussed.
As per the statement by the External Affairs Ministry, the meeting which was held via video conference was attended by the Foreign Ministers of the East Asia Summit (EAS) participating countries. It was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Vietnam Pham Bin Minh.

10th East Asia Summit Foreign Minister’s Meet: Key Highlights
• During the virtual meeting, the ways and means were discussed to strengthen the Leaders-led EAS platform and to make it more responsive to the emerging challenges on its 15th anniversary.
• The ministers attending the meeting exchanged views on the current international and regional developments. It also included the Coronavirus pandemic and the cooperation to achieve a speedy and sustainable recovery.
• The 10th East Asia Summit Meeting also reviewed the status of the commitments made by the participating countries under the EAS framework and the progress in the implementation of the Manila Plan of Action (2018-2022) to implement the Phnom Penh Declaration on the EAS Development Initiative, which was adopted by EAS leaders in 2012.
• Preparations of the upcoming 15th East Asia Summit scheduled in November 2020 were also discussed.

Muraleedharan’s address during the 10th East Asia Summit:
The Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan during his address appreciated Vietnam’s efforts, as ASEAN Chair. He also acknowledged Vietnam’s work of providing continued stewardship towards a ‘Cohesive and Responsive ASEAN’ in the difficult times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also underlined the key role played by the East Asia Summit (EAS) as a leading mechanism of the Indo-Pacific Region and reiterated India’s support and efforts to make it ‘stronger and more responsive’.
About the East Asia Summit:
The East Asia Summit (EAS) is the premier forum in the Asia-Pacific Region to deal with the issues related to defence and security. Formed in 2005, the group has played a significant role in the geopolitical, strategic, and economic evaluation of East Asia.
Apart from the 10 ASEAN member states, East Asia Summit also includes China, India, Japan, Australia, the Republic of Korea, the United States, New Zealand, and Russia.
