The Parliament of Yemen enacted emergency laws on 23 March 2011 to give special powers to its President Ali Abdullah Saleh to arrest, detain and to impose censorship on any kind of uprising demanding his ouster. This move was initiated to thwart the mass rising against the President which includes military commanders, religious leaders and protesting youth demanding his immediate resignation.
The military of Yemen is divided into two factions with one faction is loyal to the President while the other has sided with the protesters demanding resignation from Ali Abdullah Saleh.
