On 30 June 2011 Raj Kumar Singh took over as Union Home Secretary of India. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cleared his appointment. Singh succeeded Gopal Krishna Pillai who completed his two-year tenure on 29 June 2011. RK Singh emphasized on Naxalism as one of the major challenges faced by India. Strengthening the operational skills and development programmes to counter this threat was given prime importance by Singh.
About RK Singh
RK Singh is a Bihar-cadre Indian Administrative Service officer of the 1975 batch. Singh had earlier served in the home ministry as a joint secretary for nearly five years. This coupled with his experience in the defence ministry helped him to score over two other shortlisted candidates Punjab Chief Secretary S.C. Agarwal and Central Panchayati Raj Secretary A.N.P. Sinha.
