A Rhinoceros that was trapped in the River Brahmaputra’s Sand Bar of Rani Chopari was rescued by the rescue team on 7 October 2012. The Rhino lost its way to protect itself from its flood-hit habitat of the Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary of Assam was rescued by the Environment and Forest Department on seventh day from the Kamrup district in the lower Assam region.
The rescued rhino was kept in supervision by the Environment and Forest department at the Guwahati zoo to ensure its healing from the wounds that it faced during and before the rescue operation. Later it will be sent to its original habitat in the Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary.
Rhinoceros, the one horned animal fears a challenge of extinction is also killed by the poachers for their horns. The horns of this species in many cultures are used as an ornament as well as are demanded for the medicinal properties.
The Assam Government deployed a team of 100-elite forces to protect the species in the Kaziranga National Park on 2 October 2012. Before this the Government also ordered a CBI probe against the poaching activity of the Rhinos in and around the national park area.
