Seven athletes selected at GAIL Indian Speed Star Season II
PT Usha, who is one of the members of the National selection committee, said that she hopes that the country will be able to win a medal in athletics by the 2024 Olympics.
The Season II of GAIL Indian Speed Star culminated on 10 May 2017 in New Delhi with the selection of 7 athletes. The grand finale of this grass root athletics program was held at Thyagaraj Sports Complex.
Now, these seven athletes will be trained to compete in international athletic events.
The GAIL Indian Speed Star culminated after a series of trials across India. Starting with over 113000 aspirants initially, as many as 118 athletes had qualified trials at the zonal level from 107 districts of India before top 7 were selected from the national camp.
PT Usha, who is one of the members of the National selection committee, said that she was happy to be associated with GAIL Raftaar since the inaugural season. She said the initiative is providing support to young athletes in Under 14 and Under 16 categories.
PT Usha said that she hopes that the country will be able to win a medal in athletics by the 2024 Olympics. The hope depends on the level of talents available as well as the coaching and support facilities that are being provided to them, the athletes.
GAIL Indian Speed Star
NYCS and GAIL (India) Limited have together embarked on a grassroots athletics program GAIL-Indian Speed star which is aimed at unearthing young talent across the length and breadth of India. NYCS GAIL-Indian Speed star is planned to identity and nurture talent in track events (100m, 200m and 400m) between the age group of 11 to 17 years, furthering them through access to coaching, physiotherapy, mental conditioning, foreign training and other support services.
