Indian ace tennis player, Somdev Devvarman on 23 November 2010 became the first Indian to win gold in men’s singles tennis event of the Asian Games. He defeated world number 44 Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-1 6-2 to win the medal in the Asian Games in China on 23 November. Second seed Somdev, who had won a gold in the men's doubles event alongwith Sanam Singh yesterday, upset top seed and world number 44 Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-1 6-2 in the lop-sided summit clash here to achieve the historic feat. He had won the men’s doubles gold medal with Sanam Singh beating Maoxin Gong and Li Zhe of China 6-3, 6-7 (4) and 10-8 in the Super tie-break on 22 November 2010 in Asian Games, China.
Devvarman is the first Indian to have won the medal in the men’s single tennis event in Asian Games. Sania Mirza had won silver in 2006 in Doha in singles. In men’s singles category, Paes had won a bronze in 1994 in Hiroshima Games while Mahesh Bhupathi and Prahlad Srinath won a bronze each in 1998 Games in Bangkok.
On the other hand India’s ace discus thrower Krishna Poonia bagged a bronze in the 2010 Asian Games in China.
