Australia’s former cricket captain Steve Waugh’s statue was unveiled on 5 January 2011, the third day of the fifth Ashes Test match at Sydney. Australia’s most successful captain, Steve Waugh was commemorated in bronze in a series of sporting icons. The 10th and final statue of the series of statues showed Waugh raising his bat and his baggy cap in celebration of his 29th Test century. Waugh had completed his 29th century in style in 2003 at Sydney off the final ball of a day’s play against England. The statue also shows the right-handed batsman’s famous red rag with which he used to wipe his perspiration during the matches.
Steve Waugh made his Test debut in 1985 against India and One Day International debut in 1986 against New Zealand. Waugh in his career played 168 Tests for Australia in which he scored 10927 runs. He was also a successful right-arm medium bowler. He took 92 Test wickets and 195 wickets in ODIs. The former Australian captain was introduced into the International Cricket Council’s Hall of Fame in January 2010 at SCG.
