The 2011 Sunday Times Rich List released over the 7-8 May 2011 weekend, revealed that the 1000 wealthiest people in the UK are currently worth a combined £395.8 billion. The number of billionaires rose from 53 to 73, while nine people have seen their fortunes rise by £1 billion or more over the past one year.
The rich list was topped by Lakshmi Mittal. However he was also the biggest loser from 2010 as his fortune drop by 22%, though he still has the fastest-growing fortune and is the third-largest political donor, giving £1,000 million to Labour.
Another Indian, gamer, Anurag Dikshit topped the giving list by transferring a massive £172.4 million from his personal fortune to charitable foundation Kusuma Trust in India.
Gopi and Srichand Hinduja made a surprise new entry at number 9 while Ravi Ruia, who moved to London prior to listing Essar Energy, found entry at No. 12, and Ajay Kalsi, promoter of the AIM-listed Indus Gas at No. 58.
Among the others in the top 10 list is Russian steel tycoon Alisher Usmanov who is the second richest. The list also includes Asians and Europeans, and the toppers are crammed with Russians, Asians and Europeans.
The Duke of Westminster - who owns half the land in central London was at number four. The Queen is somewhere around the 88th.
There are also more women than usual, over 100 for the first time, including Chinese-born property entrepreneur Xiuli Hawken.
The list of the top 10 richest person in the list is as follows: Lakshmi Mittal, Alisher Usmanov, Roman Abramovich, The Duke of Westminster, Ernesto & Kirsty Bertarelli, Leonardo Blavatnik, John Frediksen & his family, David & Simon Reuben, Gopi & Sir Hinduja, Galen & George Weston & Family, Charlene & Michel de Carvalho.
The ninth position was jointly shared by Gopi & Sir Hinduja and Galen & George Weston.
