The Government of Tamil Nadu on 10 October 2012 moved to the Supreme Court (SC) against the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Jagadish Shivappa Shettar and six others for initiation of content of court for disobeying the courts order, given on 28 September 2012 for releasing 9000 cusecs of water from the Cauvery to Tamil Nadu till 15 October 2012.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa after chairing a meet with the senior members of the cabinet and identifying the situation, directed them to file a plea in form of courts contempt against the Counterpart at Karnataka, as an immediate action plan. This came up after Karnataka stopped the release of water from Krishna Raja Sagar Dam citing depletion of stored water.
