Tata Power in consortium with SN Power Norway bagged the Dugar Hydro Electric Project in Chenab Valley, Himachal Pradesh in April 2011. The 236-MW project is estimated to cost about Rs 2,300 crore.
The Dugar project will be developed by a special purpose vehicle. The pre-implementation agreement will be signed with the Directorate of Energy, Himachal Pradesh. A detailed exploration and design study will be undertaken to finalise implementation.
The project across the river Chandrabhaga (Chenab) will primarily feed the Northern grid. The dam height would be 93 metre with an underground cavern type powerhouse at its base.
This project is poised to contribute to Tata’s clean fuel portfolio and reinforces their sustainability agenda.
Himachal Pradesh has abundant hydro resources with a potential of about 23000 MW.
Tata Power and SN Power had in 2009 entered into an exclusive partnership to develop hydropower projects in India and Nepal.
Tata Power currently has 3000 MW through hydro, thermal, solar and wind energy with an additional 5500 MW in construction. It has 447 MW of operational hydro power in Maharashtra, which feeds power to Mumbai. 114 MW from Dagachhu Hydro Project is under construction in Bhutan in joint venture with Druk Green Power Company, Bhutan.
