Tata Power on 22 December 2010 declared that it signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the Mithapur power project with the Gujarat State power utility, Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) and was developing a 25 MW solar photovoltaic power project at Mithapur, Gujarat. The solar photovoltaic power plant which will spread across 100 acres along the coastline of Gujarat will be among the largest plants of its kind in the country. The solar plant designed to be based on crystalline silicon photovoltaic technology is targeted to be commissioned by December 2011.
Tata Power is also in the process of developing the first 4000 MW ultra mega power project at Mundra in Gujarat, which is based on super critical technology. Tata Power has finished close to 65 per cent work on the first unit of 800 MW in its Mundra (UMPP) in Gujarat.
