IPS officer Aparna Kumar to be conferred Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2018

IPS Officer Aparna Kumar will be honoured with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2018 in the ‘Land adventure’ category. The names of the winners of Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards 2018 were announced by the government on August 27, 2019.

Aparna Kumar is a 2002 batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh Cadre. She is currently posted as DIG in the Indo Tibetan Police Force at Dehradun. Aparna Kumar is the first IPS officer to be honoured with the prestigious Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2018.

Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards

The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards are the highest national awards for adventure sports in India, at par with the Arjuna award.

The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards are conferred annually to recognize the achievements of the people in the field of adventure on land, sea and air and to encourage young people to develop endurance, undertake risks, be a team player and demonstrate quick, ready and effective reflexes in situations that are challenging. The awards also aim to provide an incentive to the young people for getting exposed to the adventure activities.

The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards are conferred in four categories - Land Adventure, Water Adventure, Air Adventure and Life Time Achievement. 

The awards were conferred by the government based on the recommendations of the National Selection Committee. The committee chaired by Secretary (Youth Affairs) had experts from the field of adventure as members.    

The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards 2018 will be presented along with other sports awards by President Ram Nath Kovind on August 29, 2019 on the occasion of National Sports day at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The awardees will receive statuettes, certificates and cash prize worth Rs. 5 lakh each.
