The Congress won the state assembly elections in Assam and returned to the power for a third consecutive term according to the election results declared on 13 May 2011 by the Election Commission of India. Congress led by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi won 78 seats while AGP could manage only 10 seats. BJP won 5 seats only.
Apart from Bimla Prasad Chaliha, Tarun Gogoi is the only chief minister of Assam to win a third term in office. The term of the Legislative Assembly of Assam is set to expire on 28 May 2011.
