The Union Cabinet of India, on 15 March 2011, approved the setting up of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) in New Delhi. MGIEP is going to be ASIA’s first Category I UNESCO institute. The institution will aim to foster a culture of peace through education, promoting sustainable economic and social development and respect for human rights.
Presently, there are 11 UNESCO Category I institutes.
