A three day campaign named Save Ganga, Save Dolphin started on 5 October 2012 in Uttar Pradesh. 18 boats were flagged off by the Transport Minister of the State Raja Mahendra Aridaman Singh on this day to have a check on the population of the dolphins in the Gangetic River System in the state.
The World Wild Life Fund (WWF) in association with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department and some of the local volunteers including 16 NGOs started the campaign in the 2800 kilometer long Ganga and its tributaries. Save Ganga Save Dolhpin was initiated with an aim of spreading awareness about the Riverine species the Gangetic Dolphins and its protection. This campaign was called off on 7 October 2012 by the Chief Minister of the state Akhilesh Yadav.
