China has constructed an experimental air purifying tower called the Xian smog tower, which is touted to be the ‘world’s biggest air purifier’, to combat its severe smog and air pollution. The tower is undergoing tests by researchers of the Institute of Earth Environment at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is reported to be having a positive effect on the air quality in the area.

Indian Captain Virat Kohli was named the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year at the ICC annual awards, which were announced in Dubai on 18 January 2018.The award is courtesy the 29-year-old’s splendid form during the qualification period, which was from September 2016 till the end of 2017, when he knocked up a total of 2203 runs including 8 centuries in tests, 1818 runs with 7 centuries in ODIs and 299 runs in T20 Internationals.

The Prime Minister of United Kingdom, Theresa May on 17 January 2018 announced the appointment of Sports minister Tracey Crouch as the country’s first ‘Minister for loneliness’. The move has been made to tackle the isolation felt by more than one in ten people in the UK. In her additional role, Tracey Crouch would be required to develop a strategy to address loneliness in the nation.

While Arvind Parikh, R Vedavalli and Ram Gopal Bajaj received the Akademi fellowship, Satyabrata Rout won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction.

Indian Captain Virat Kohli was named the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year at the ICC annual awards, which were announced in Dubai on 18 January 2018. Besides this, Kohli also won the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award and was named the captain of the ICC Test and ODI teams of the year.

The Madhya Pradesh government has claimed that the state has become the first one in India to achieve 100 per cent door-to-door garbage collection target in urban bodies. The door-to-door garbage management was carried out after the state eliminated ill practices such as open defecation in urban areas.

The Maharashtra state cabinet on 17 January 2018 approved one per cent reservation for orphans in government jobs under the general category. Speaking on the development, the state’s Women and Child Welfare Minister Pankaja Munde said that it will help rehabilitate orphan children and secure their future.

North and South Korea, in a rare move, agreed on 17 January 2018 to march together under a single unified Korean flag at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, which is scheduled to go underway in South Korea in February 2018. The two warring Korean nations also agreed to field a joint women's ice hockey team in rare talks at the truce village of Panmunjom.
11. (b) Constitutional validity of the Aadhaar
A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice Dipak Misra began the much-awaited hearing on the constitutional validity of Aadhaar card on 17 January 2018. The landmark hearing comes five months after a nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court ruled that the right to privacy is intrinsic to right to life and liberty and thus is a fundamental right guaranteed under Article 21 of the Indian constitution.

The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, presented the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Fellowships and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for the year 2016 at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 17 January 2018. The Akademi award for Bharatanatyam went to Geeta Chandran.
