Results of the UK general election were released on Friday, and a record number of about 26 members of Parliament with Indian ancestry were elected to the House of Commons. A number of Conservatives also managed to survive an all-around devastating finish for their party.
This year, 107 candidates of British-Indian descent ran for seats in the House of Commons. There were a total of 15 Indian-origin British Parliamentarians in the House of Commons.

Rishi Sunak:
Rishi Sunak, the current Prime Minister, kept his seat in northern England, but his Conservative Party lost the general election to the Labour Party, which won 378 seats. Sunak thanked everyone on X (formerly Twitter), saying, "To the many Conservative candidates, volunteers, and voters: I appreciate your hard work, support, and votes."
Sunak made history as the first British Asian Prime Minister. Before becoming Prime Minister, he held several cabinet positions, including Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022 under Boris Johnson. He was the MP for Richmond (Yorks) from 2015 to 2024 and has represented Richmond and Northallerton since 2024.
Shivani Raja
Shivani Raja, a Conservative Party candidate, won the Leicester East seat, defeating the Labour Party. She competed against former MPs Claude Webbe and Keith Vaz, who both ran as independents.
Born and raised in Leicester, Raja attended Herrick Primary, Soar Valley College, and Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College. She graduated with first-class honors in cosmetic science from De Montfort University.
Kanishk Narayan
Kanishka Narayan, a Labour Party candidate, made history as the first MP in Wales from a minority background, defeating former Welsh secretary Alun Cairns. India-born Narayan relocated to Cardiff when he was twelve years old. He earned a scholarship to Eton and went on to study at Oxford and Stanford before pursuing a career as a civil servant.
Suella Braverman:
Suella Braverman, a Conservative Party member, led the European Research Group from 2017 to 2018. She served as the Attorney General for England and Wales from 2020 to March 2021 and again from September 2021 to 2022. She represented Fareham as an MP from 2015 to 2024.
Preeti Patel:
Former Home Secretary Priti Patel has retained her seat in Witham, Essex, winning 37.2 percent of the vote to defeat the Labour Party candidate. Of Gujarati descent, Patel served as Home Secretary from 2019 to 2022. She is a member of the Conservative Party who has served as an MP for Witham since 2010.
Preeti Kaur Gill:
Gill, a Labour Party member, was re-elected in Birmingham Edgbaston. She served as the Shadow Minister for Primary Care and Public Health in Rishi Sunak’s government.
