Cellular service provider Vodafone Essar launched its first solar powered phone VF 247 in India on 27 July 2010. VF 247 is designed to cater the rural masses that prefer low-end handsets. The phone can be charged by exposing the set to sunlight. Also the phone can be charged under normal daylight inside the room with the support of hardware and software powered by Sun Boost technology.
