1. (a) Tushar Mehta
Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta was on October 10, 2018 appointed as the Solicitor General of India with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the office for a period till June 30, 2020 or until further orders. His appointment was approved by the Appointment Committee of Cabinet.
2. (c) Singapore
The World Bank launched its first Human Capital Index (HCI) in Bali, Indonesia on October 11, 2018, as part of the World Development Report 2019. The index ranks 157 countries based on their education and health outcomes and the impact they are having on productivity. While Singapore tops the rankings, African countries occupying the bottom spots.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga won India’s first gold medal at Youth Olympics in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires. The 15-year-old weightlifter shattered the national record in the men's 62kg category to claim the top honours. Manu Bhaker also rediscovered her form by shooting 236.5 to finish at the top with the gold medal in the women's 10m air pistol event.

The Malaysian Cabinet has decided to abolish the death penalty for all crimes and halt all pending executions. Capital punishment is currently mandatory in Malaysia for a wide range of crimes including murder, drug trafficking, treason, kidnapping, possession of firearms and acts of terror.

The Indian Air Force launched an innovative mobile health application called ‘MedWatch’ on October 8, 2018, on the occasion of its 86th anniversary. The app comprises a host of features including information on basic first aid, health topics and nutritional facts.

The World Mental Health Day was observed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on October 10, 2018 with an aim to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilising efforts in support of mental health.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu presented the Ramineni Foundation's outstanding person award to badminton coach Pullela Gopichand on October 7, 2018. He also presented special awards to Telugu literary wizard Garikapati Narasimha Rao, film director Nag Ashwin Reddy and writer C Venkata Ramana.

Indian-American Nikki Haley on October 9, 2018 resigned as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. President Donald Trump made the formal announcement of her resignation and applauded her work. He cited that Haley wanted to take a break.

The ‘Break Free From Plastic Movement’ on October 9, 2018 revealed that Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestle are among the companies that contribute most to ocean pollution with single-use plastics. As per the study, Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Nestle were the most frequent companies in contributing to ocean pollution, identified in 239 cleanups and brand audits spanning 42 countries and six continents.
10. (a) Pankaj Sharma
Pankaj Sharma has been appointed as the ambassador and India's permanent representative to the United Nations Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. He will replace Amandeep Gill. Sharma is currently the joint secretary (Disarmament and International Security Division) in the Ministry of External Affairs.
11. (d) Abhilash Tomy
Indian Naval Officer Abhilash Tomy, who was representing India in Golden Globe Race 2018, one of the world’s toughest endurance races, was brought to Visakhapatnam safely onboard INS Satpura on October 6, 2018. On September 21, Commander Tomy’s sailing vessel ‘Thuriya’ was dismasted when the boat was caught in a violent storm in the South Indian Ocean. He suffered a severe back injury and dropped out of the race.
12. (b) Odisha
The Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik has launched 'Nirman Kusuma' programme to provide financial assistance to the children of the construction workers for their technical education in the state. Under the programme, an ITI student will be entitled to get financial assistance worth Rs 23,600 and a diploma student will get assistance worth Rs 26,300 per annum.
