The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released a new report showing that India increased its forest land area by 2,66,000 hectares per year between 2010 and 2020. This feat has placed the country at third position out of the top 10 countries with the most advances in this time frame.
China and Australia emerged as the top 2 countries on the list, with China adding 1,937,000 hectares of forest and Australia adding 446,000 hectares.
India Getting Praised Globally
The UN agency has praised India for its efforts in restoring damaged lands and increasing agroforestry in the country. The agency also praised the government for creating a new national policy that supports agroforestry efforts in the country.
China At the Top
According to the recently released report, China has emerged as the top country with the most forest gains between the years 2010 and 2020. China managed to increase its forest cover by 1,937,000 hectares in these 10 years. Australia followed with 446,000 hectares, with India coming next. Other countries in the top 10 are Chile, Vietnam, Turkey, the United States, France, Italy, and Romania.

Significant Drop in Deforestation
The study observed a significant decline in deforestation in a few nations. The Amazon forest of Brazil saw a 50% decrease in deforestation in the year 2023, while Indonesia saw an 8.4% decline in deforestation from 2021 to 2022.
Additionally, the FAO reported that comparing the ten years between 2000 and 2010, and 2010 and 2020, there was reportedly a 23% decrease in the loss of mangroves globally.
