The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that free update services for Aadhaar cards will be available until 14 December 2024. Individuals can update important demographic details such as name, address, and phone number free of charge. After this date, updates will be processed with a fee.

Important Details

Deadline for Free Updates: December 14, 2024. This is the second extension of the deadline, which was initially set to end on June 14, 2024, and then extended to September 14, 2024, before the latest extension. 

What Can Be Updated

Users can update various demographic details online through the My Aadhaar portal, including:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Date of birth (DOB)

However, biometric updates, such as fingerprints or iris scans, need to be updated in person at an Aadhaar center.

Fees After Deadline:

  • Online updating will cost ₹25
  • Updating at physical Aadhaar centers will cost ₹50.

How to Update Aadhaar Online

It is simple to update your Aadhaar details online:

  1. Visit the My Aadhaar Portal: Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
  2. Log In: Enter your Aadhaar number and authenticate using the One-Time Password (OTP) sent to your registered mobile number.
  3. Select Update Option: Choose the type of update you wish to perform.
  4. Upload Documents: Provide scanned copies of the necessary documents (in JPEG, PNG, or PDF format, under 2 MB).
  5. Submit Request: After reviewing your information, submit your request.
  6. Track Your Request: Note down the Service Request Number (SRN) for tracking your update status

To update your Aadhaar card online, you need to provide specific documents that serve as Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA). Here’s a detailed list of the required documents:

Documents Required for Aadhaar Update

Proof of Identity (POI)

You can submit any one of the following documents as proof of identity:

  • Passport
  • Voter ID Card
  • Driving License
  • PAN Card/e-PAN
  • Ration Card
  • School Transfer Certificate with photograph
  • Marksheet or certificate issued by a recognized Board/University with photograph
  • Government-issued photo ID cards (e.g., CGHS card, arms license)

Proof of Address (POA)

For address updates, you can provide any one of the following documents:

  • Passport
  • Bank Statement or Passbook (not older than 3 months)
  • Electricity Bill (not older than 3 months)
  • Water Bill (not older than 3 months)
  • Gas Connection Bill (not older than 3 months)
  • Property Tax Receipt (not older than 1 year)
  • Domicile Certificate or Resident Certificate
  • Signed letter from a bank or registered company on letterhead with a photo

Common Documents Accepted as Both POI and POA

Some documents can serve as both POI and POA:

  • Ration Card
  • Voter ID Card
  • Driving License

Additional Documents

For specific cases, other documents may be accepted:

  • NREGA Job Card
  • Pensioner Card
  • Certificate issued by a Gazetted Officer or Tehsildar in UIDAI standard format
