Russian mathematician Mikhail Gromov was awarded the 2009 Abel Prize. Gromov was honoured for his contributions to numerous areas of geometry, including Riemannian geometry, symplectic geometry, and geometric group theory. The Abel Prize is an international prize presented annually by the King of Norway to one or more outstanding mathematicians. The prize, carries a cash award of $929,000, is named after Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel.
